Contents of the new test (2025)
The questions are still divided into three main sections:
- American Government
- American History
- Symbols & Holidays

Differences in details β What has changed in practice
- More questions: 128 instead of 100.
- More demanding: you need to get 12 right, not just 6.
- More tolerance for error: you can get up to 9 wrong.
- Updated content: more focus on recent history, social movements, and American culture.

New questions added to the 2025 test
Compared to the previous test (2008), approximately 28 new questions were included, many related to recent history, culture, and innovations. Here are some examples of new additions:

- What does βWe the Peopleβ mean? (self-government, popular sovereignty, social contract)
- Why do representatives have shorter terms than senators? (to more closely follow public opinion)
- Why can the president only serve two terms? (22nd Amendment)
- π Recent History
- Why did the US enter the Gulf War? (to expel the Iraqi army from Kuwait)
- What happened on September 11, 2001? (terrorist attacks in the US)
- Name a US military conflict after 9/11. (War in Afghanistan, War in Iraq, War on Terror)
- π American Culture and Innovations
- Give an example of American innovation. (airplane, automobile, moon landing, integrated circuit)
- What was the nation’s first motto, βE Pluribus Unumβ? (Out of many, one)
- π Symbols and Holidays
- Inclusion of Juneteenth as a national holiday.
These questions did not exist in the 2008 test and were added to modernize the content and reflect current American society.

Who will take the new test?
- Those who submit their N-400 on or after October 20, 2025 β will take the new test (2025).
- Those who apply before that date β will take the old test (2008), even if the interview takes place later.
